Working at the intersection of Global and Local to Increase Livability and Protect the Planet
What is the goal we need to achieve? What is our vision for activating our hope for the future now? Inquiry, personal and systemic, helps us understand the problems we need to solve and shine light on the strengths underpinning our progress. What do we need to unlearn to prepare ourselves to learn and change?
For each organization or person or community there are foundational elements to build on, as well as barriers to overcome. Analyzing the situation for acknowledgement and understanding establishes a strong start to build successful interventions - programs, learning opportunities, coaching, policy changes, etc. Understanding where we are: what works, what does not work, helps us get to where we need to go.
Substantial, lasting improvement depends on new social norms and behaviors. Systemic change requires more than new policies and laws. Individual actions and decisions have to align with different assumptions, values, and practices. To achieve our goals some norms are to be protected, others to be forged or remembered and reapplied. This takes time, care, and multiplicity of interventions.
Each small action and improvement adds up to enduring success. What can we achieve today to create momentum toward our larger goal? What are the different actions, rules, social norms, policies, behaviors, systems, etc. needing many incremental changes to take us, step by step, to our desired outcomes? Individual, organizational, community, and societal baby steps add up to culture shift and systemic change. No step is too small to start.
